Publishing programme

“Transgressing national borders and connecting the academic world“ !

This phrase sums up both the objective and the programme of the Academic Publishing Company “WISSENSCHAFTLICHER VERLAG DR. MICHAEL P. BACHMANN“ which was launched in June 2007.

It is now half a century ago that the Treaty of Rome, which established the European Economic Community and created the basis for a unified Europe, was signed on March 25th 1957. Today, however, improvement as regards transnational cooperation is still needed, not only in the polical and economic, but also in the academic world.

Our publishing company aims to intensify the cooparation not only with our German-speaking neighbours, but also with the French- and Italian-speaking nations of Europe. It is often the language barrier which complicates or hinders a closer cooperation with France or Italy, although e. g. German-Italian relations can and should be seen against the background of a common history in the Middle Ages.

In the academic world we have also not yet tapped the full potential of transnational cooperation. Institutions like the “Monumenta Germaniae Historica“ in Munich, the “Società Internazionale per lo Studio del Medioevo Latino“ in Florence or the “Institut de Recherche et d’Histoire des Textes“ (which is part of the “Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique“) in Paris, to name only three departments from the field of Medieval Latin, all play a significant role in their own countries. To illuminate what is still often mistakenly seen as the “dark middle ages“ the cooperation between these institutes is essential.

Our publishing company therefore will approach academic institutions in different countries and encourage transnational projects. The research results of these cooperations are then to be published in multilingual collections with the expert advice and assistance of the publishing company.

A second objective of our publishing company is the intensification of the multidisciplinarity which has been becoming more and more important over the past decades. One important, though not our only focus of attention, are the Middle Ages.

We aim to publish scientific collections in which conference volumes from multisdisciplinary conferences are published. Apart from anthologies which deal with a particular research topic from the angle of different disciplines, we will also include mulidisciplinary manuals, periodicals or monographies in our publishing programme.

Therefore we will target researchers and institutes of German and Romance languages, Scandinavistics, Latin, Law (the focus here lies on the European History of Law and Clerical Law) as well as Musical Sciences, Philosophy, Theology or History in order to encourage publications which correspond with the objectives of our publishing company.
